Few players have ever walked to the plate with more electricity than Darryl Strawberry. The long, looping left-handed swing launched 335 career home runs and made him one of the most feared sluggers of the 1980s - a hitter opposing pitchers game-planned around and fans arrived early just to watch take batting practice.
Taken first overall by the New York Mets in the 1980 draft out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, Strawberry was named National League Rookie of the Year in 1983 and earned eight straight All-Star selections. He powered the unforgettable 1986 Mets to a World Series championship and left Queens as the franchise's all-time home run leader - a mark he still holds. Three more rings with the Yankees in 1996, 1998 and 1999 gave him four championships across both sides of New York.
Strawberry's second act has become every bit as compelling as his first. After walking through hard seasons of his own, he emerged as an ordained minister, and with his wife Tracy founded Strawberry Ministries and co-founded a recovery center in Florida - work devoted to helping people rebuild their lives. In 2024 the Mets retired his No. 18 at Citi Field before an emotional sellout crowd, cementing his place among the franchise's immortals.
